The Challenge: Improve population health across the region

Fraser Health provides a wide range of integrated health care services to more than 1.6 million people living in communities stretching from Burnaby, B.C. to White Rock to Hope. As one of Canada's largest and fastest growing health authorities, Fraser Health has over 26,000 employees, 2,500 physicians and nearly 6,500 volunteers.

The Fraser Health Authority and the Institute for Health System Transformation & Sustainability (IHSTS), a BC-based, nationally focused think tank that looks for practical ways to transform and sustain Canada’s healthcare system, were looking for effective ways to improve the health of the population and sustain the ability to provide safe, high-quality care for patients, clients, residents and families. Building on work already underway in Fraser Health, the project sought to identify, implement and evaluate promising health system improvement alternatives.

The Improvement Project: Transformation project involves commissioned research

In 2011, IHSTS and the Fraser Health Authority joined with CFHI, then the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, on a multi-phased health system transformation project. Three research papers were commissioned to generate knowledge and understanding foundational to advancing transformation in the region:

The Result: Commissioned papers yield key information

The results of the papers are helping the project team achieve an accurate and common understanding of the Fraser Health context for improving health outcomes as well as an understanding of how other high-performing systems manage clinical care—a top priority for Fraser Health. These are key steps toward informing the next phases of the transformation project, including articulating a vision and identifying actions and interventions to achieve and measure progress.

The Impact: Spreading knowledge to accelerate healthcare improvement

The project partners are committed to spreading learning and innovations from the Fraser Health project as it unfolds in order to accelerate healthcare improvement for all Canadians.
